Diagnosis. A very variable species. It can be distinguished by light brown to ochreous or reddish-brown forewing mixed with grey, the distinct narrow white post-medial and white angulated ante-medial lines ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1–12 ). Nearly porrect, weakly up-turned, comparatively long labial palpus are characteristic too. Ancylosis dumetella ( Ragonot, 1887) from Central Asia is very similar externally but the labial palpus are strongly up-turned and 1.5 times as long as an eye diameter (weakly up-turned and 2.5 times as long as an eye diameter in A. cinnamomella ). The specimens with reduced light brown pattern may be confused with also rather variable A. roscidella but the latter is usually more plainly coloured, pale, not so bright, usually with ochreous patch on ⅓ of dorsum and without distinct trans- verse lines ( Figs 13, 14 View FIGURES 13–28 ). It differs additionally in the shorter, up-turned labial palpus. The male genitalia are characterized by uncus that is broader in its basal portion than valva, slightly narrowed tegumen with short anteromedial notch and the slender aedeagus ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 33–38 ). The differences from A. roscidella are discussed under that species. The long (longer than ductus bursae), weakly narrowed distally corpus bursae covered with thorn-shaped comparatively short signa are characteristic for the female genitalia ( Fig. 60 View FIGURES 59–62 ). Ancylosis roscidella differs in the more narrowed distally corpus bursae with the larger number of signa in its proximal part ( Fig. 68 View FIGURES 66–68 ).

Biology. The larvae feed between spun basal leaves on Sedum atre (L.) and Globularia sp. ( Roesler 1973: 321, cit. after Disqué 1906: 35) as well as on Artemisia campestris (L.) and Astragalus baionnensis Lois. ( Leraut 2014; Sinev 1986: 326). The description of the larva is provided by Roesler (1973: 319). In Ukraine adults have been registered from mid May to mid June and then from the end of July to mid September in steppe and meadow-steppe habitats.

Distribution. Palaearctic region eastwards to Krasnoyarskiy krai and Zabaikalskiy krai of Russia ( Roesler 1973; Sinev 2008), Central Asia (subspecies bichordella Ragonot, 1887) and Mongolia (subspecies nigrorubella Roesler, 1970). In Ukraine is known from Crimea ( Budashkin 1992, 2004, 2006), Ivano-Frankivsk ( Stockl 1922), Chernivtsi ( Hormuzaki 1907), Ternopil ( Toll 1939), Kyiv ( Sovinskij 1926; Zhikharev 1928; Lebediev 1937), Kharkiv ( Karolinskiy et al. 2018), Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk ( Bidzilya et al. 2001) and Cherkasy regions.

Remarks. Ancylosis cinnamomella is a very variable species broadly distributed through the Palaearctic region. Five subspecies are currently recognized as valid. However, their status is in need of revision as some of subspecies are rather unclearly diagnosed and have an overlapped areals (the sympatrical populations of A. c. cinnamomella and A. c. bichordella occur in the European Russia ( Roesler 1973: 323)). The specimens from Ukraine studied by us match externally to the nomimative subspecies. The specimens from Crimea are usually larger and have more extensive yellowish-brown pattern than more plainly greyish-black specimens from Northern Ukraine. However, the dark specimens occur in Crimea too.
