Acanthagrion Selys, 1876

A large genus of slender, usually small damselflies, mostly black but usually with blue, green or orange stripes on the thorax and tip of the abdomen ( Fig. 12View FIGURE 12). The appendages of males slant posteroventrally and the apical rim of abdominal segment 10 is often elevated; females usually have paired mesepisternal fossae. Habitat includes vegetated ponds, lake margins, and slow areas of streams. For decades, species identification relied on Leonard (1977), but numerous errors and synonymies have been found in that publication. For recent taxonomic changes and additions, see Lozano (2007, 2013), von Ellenrieder & Lozano (2008) and Machado (2012a). The genus is in need of revision.

Acanthagrion ascendens Calvert, 1909  . Publ. Recs. ECU: Paulson (1983 “?”), Tsuda (1986, 1991), (H08), Lozano (2007), (H14 — as A. cf. ascendens  ), (P16); GY: * Campos (1922 — as A. gracile var ascendens  , redetermined as A. floridense  by KJT), Leonard (1977); OR: Francisco de Orellana: Tennessen (2004 — “tentatively identified”). PA: Gloger (1967). Also BRA, COL, GUF, GUY, SUR, TTO, VEN: (L06), (P11); plus BOL, PER (H08), (P16); and PRY, (H08).

Addl. Data. OR, Francisco de Orellana, 1 ♂, pond near Río Savaleto, km marker 31, P.N.Y., 17 vii 1996, leg. & det. Note: The ♂ examined has color variation—S9 is orange, as discussed by Tennessen (2004).

Note: A ♂ and ♀ from F. Campos taken at Tena were identified as A. ascendens  . We checked the ♂ which is in FSCA and it is A. floridense  . The ♀ was sent back to ANSP and may also be A. floridense  .

Note: Machado (2012a) split A. apicale  into several species. After discussion with and evidence provided by Rosser Garrison (pers. comm., 2017), we recognize A. apicale  as the species in Ecuador and A. chicomendesi  as a possible junior synonym of A. apicale  .

Note: Leonard (1977) considered A. cuyabae  and its two subspecies as synonyms of A. lancea Selys, 1876  . Federico Lozano (pers. comm., 2019) found that A. cuyabae  is a valid species and that A. viridescens  is a synonym of A. cuyabae  . Most published records and many specimens in various collections from Ecuador are misidentified as either A. viridescens  or A. lancea  ; probably all such records should be referred to A. cuyabae  .

Campos collected at Tena were labeled as A. ascendens  ; we checked the ♂ which is in FSCA and it is A. floridense  .
