Macrothemis Hagen, 1868

A species-rich genus of 41 species with at least 14 species in Ecuador. The latest key to males was provided by May (1998) although species identification is difficult; females of very few species are identifiable. These are small to medium-sized mostly dark dragonflies ( Fig. 100View FIGURE 100) that inhabit small streams to medium-sized rivers, both open and forested.

A male from Sucumbíos Province, near Shushufindi, collected by KJT on 13 May 2009 was sent to R. W. Garrison who replied “... this could be the unknown ♂? of M. idalia Ris  – size, body pattern, claws etc. consistent with known females; but until new material, association would be difficult.” Further collecting, especially a mated pair, will be necessary to confirm this record. Heckman (2006) stated that “without a description of the ♂, the status of this species is uncertain.”
