Type species. Caryosmilia granosa Wanner, 1902 , Danian of Egypt .

Diagnosis. Solitary, trochoid, fixed. Septa compact, nearly smooth marginally. Columella feebly developed. Paliform lobes opposite third cycle septa. Endothecal dissepiments deep in corallum.

Remarks. Wanner (1902, p. 103) created the genus Caryosmilia without depicting a holotype of the type species. Because he assigned to this species specimens from two different localities which differ in age (Babel Jasmund corresponds to the Danian whereas the sediments in the desert region north of Dachel range from the Maastrichtian to the Paleocene), the exact type locality and age of the type species was never defined.
