Itea virginica Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 1: 199. 1753 View Cited Treatment .

"Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 1621.

Lectotype (designated here by Reveal): Clayton 556, n. 2, Herb. Linn. No. 273.1 ( LINN) .

Generitype of Itea Linnaeus.

Current name: Itea virginica L. View in CoL ( Iteaceae ).

Note: Reveal (in Huntia 7: 217. 1987) indicated a Clayton sheet ("Clayton 556, pl. 2 (BM)!") as lectotype, but it has not been possible to locate material in BM annotated in this way. There may have been some confusion with a sheet annotated as Clayton 114 (BM), but this comprises material of Clethra alnifolia L. and cannot be original material for I. virginica . There is, however, Clayton material in LINN (sheet 273.1) annotated as "566, pl. 2" by Gronovius, and as " Itea 1 virginica" by Linnaeus, and this is now designated as the lectotype.
