( Figs. 89–94 View FIGURES 89 – 94 )

Neomuscina sanespra Snyder 1949: 5 View in CoL (key), 12 (description); Snyder 1954: 424 (key); Pont 1972: 51 (catalogue); de Carvalho et al. 1993: 59 (catalogue); Couri & de Carvalho 2002: 151 (key); de Carvalho et al. 2005: 96 (catalogue); Rodríguez- Fernández et al. 2006: 98 (listed); Nihei et al. 2009: 8 (listed); Schühli et al. 2011: 135 (listed).

Diagnosis: acrostichal 1:1; dorsocentral 2:4; male: intra-alars 2; mid femur with three preapical setae; wing with weak dark cloud on r-m; calypters with darkened borders; female: single row of ventral setae between segments VI and VII.

Color: general body coloration brownish yellow; frons yellow, apex darkened; facialia yellowish white; parafacialia, gena, antenna and palpus brownish yellow; scutum brownish yellow with four dark stripes of grey pruinosity; calypters brownish yellow, with darkened borders; halter brownish yellow; wing hyaline, with a light cloud on r-m.

Male. Length. Body: 6.6–7.0 mm; wing: 6.9–7.1 mm.

Head: eyes separated from each other by 0.08–0.11 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; 12–13 pairs of frontal setae; ocellar seta large and parallel; postocellar seta large and divergent; inner vertical seta small and convergent; outer vertical seta small and divergent.

Thorax: acrostichal 1:1; dorsocentral 2:4; intra-alars 2; proepimeron and prosternum with one or two setae; fore tibia with a distinct submedian anterodorsal seta; apex of fore tibia with setae on anterodorsal, dorsal, posterior and ventral surfaces; mid femur with row of setae on anterior and posteroventral surfaces from base to middle, and with row of setae on posteroventral and anteroventral surfaces from base to middle, reappearing near apex; mid femur with three preapical setae, on dorsal, posterodorsal and posterior surfaces; apex of mid tibia with setae on anterior, dorsal, posterodorsal, posterior, posteroventral, ventral and anteroventral surfaces; hind femur with complete row of posteroventral and anteroventral setae; hind tibia with one median anterodorsal seta and three median anteroventral setae; hind tibia with anterior, anterodorsal, dorsal, posterodorsal, ventral and anteroventral setae at apex; wing with one dorsal and one or two ventral setae at apex of stem vein.

Abdomen: epandrium not projected at base, in profile.

Female (differing as follows): Length. Body: 6.6–7.0 mm; wing: 6.9–7.0 mm; eyes separated from each other by 0.28–0.32 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; 9–10 pairs of frontal convergent setae, except for upper two pairs, parallel; ocellar and postocellar setae large and divergent; inner vertical seta large and convergent, and outer vertical seta large and divergent; sternite VIII with strong spike-like setae; epiproct with four setae, setae in a square-shaped arrangement (2:2).

Comments: Snyder (1949) described N. sanespra but left some morphological characters out. The mid and hind left legs of the holotype were missing and the mid right leg was broken at the apex of the femur. Nevertheless, Snyder (1949) determined the number of preapical setae on the mid femur as being three. After thorough examination of the holotype, along with conspecific specimens, we confirm that this species has three preapical setae on the mid femur, which distinguish it from N. zosteris .

Type material examined: Holotype: male, chaetotaxy in good conditions; label: red, handwritten “ Holotype male / Neomuscina / sanespra / Snyder”; label: white, handwritten “ Morellia sp.”; label: white, printed “Espírito Santo / Brasil ” ( USNM). Type-locality: Espírito Santo, Brazil.
