( Figs. 77–82 View FIGURES 77 – 82 )

Neomuscina paramediana Lopes & Khouri 1996: 954 View in CoL fig. 6 (fifth sternite), 956 fig. 7 (aedeagus, dorsal view), 957 (description), 958 figs. 11 and 12 (cercal plate, dorsal view; cercal plate, lateral view); de Carvalho et al. 2005: 95 (catalogue).

Diagnosis: acrostichal 0:1, dorsocentral 2:4; male: intra-alar 1; mid femur with three preapical setae; wing hyaline; fore tibia with a distinct median anterodorsal setae; proepimeron and proepisternum with dark setulae; katepisternum with dark setulae on posteroventral surface.

Color: general body coloration brown; frons yellow, apex darkened; facialia, parafacialia, parafrontalia, antenna and palpus yellow; scutum with four dark stripes of grey pruinosity; femora apex yellow; calypters and halter yellowish white; wing hyaline.

Male. Length. Body: 6.0– 6.2 mm; wing: 6.5–6.8 mm.

Head: eyes separated from each other by 0.09–0.1 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; 10–12 pairs of frontal setae; ocellar seta large and parallel; postocellar seta large and divergent; inner vertical and outer vertical setae small and divergent.

Thorax: acrostichal 0:1; dorsocentral 2:4; intra-alar 1; fore tibia with a distinct median anterodorsal setae; apex of fore tibia with setae on anterodorsal, dorsal, posterodorsal and posteroventral surfaces; mid femur with a row of setae on ventral surface from base to middle, and a row of weak anteroventral setae from base to basal quarter; mid femur with three preapical setae, on dorsal, posterodorsal and posterior surfaces; apex of mid tibia with setae on anterior, dorsal, posterodorsal, posteroventral, ventral and anteroventral surfaces; hind femur with a complete row of anterodorsal, dorsal and anteroventral setae; hind tibia with one median anterodorsal setae and two median anteroventral setae; hind tibia with anterior, anterodorsal, dorsal, ventral and anteroventral setae at apex; wing with one or two dorsal and one ventral setae at apex of stem vein.

Abdomen: fifth sternite with slight basal projection; epandrium with slight basal projection.

Female (differing as follows): Length. Body: 6.0– 6.3 mm; wing: 6.5–6.9 mm; eyes separated from each other by 0.28–0.3 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; 9–10 pairs of frontal convergent setae, except for upper two pairs, parallel; ocellar and postocellar setae large and divergent; inner vertical seta large and convergent, and outer vertical seta large and divergent; intra-alars 2; sternite VIII with strong spike-like setae; epiproct with four setae, setae in a square-shaped arrangement (2:2).

Comments: As indicated by Lopes & Khouri (1996), N. paramediana is very similar to N. mediana , differing mainly by the hyaline wings. The males have a fifth sternite with a small basal projection and the epandrium with a small basal projection. The female has a characteristic sternite VIII, with strong spike-like setae.
