Type :—‘ ECUADOR: crescit in regione suprema fruticetorum ad Páramo de Chaning Andium orientalium prov. Cuenca, alt. s. m. 3000– 3400 m … ([ F. C. Lehmann] n. 4915)’ (lectotype: K 000497740 !, designated by Calvo & Freire (2016: 120); isolectotypes: MO 714302 !—fragments in a capsule and an image of the holotype, US 00123278!). Iconography: Silva-Moure et al. (2013: 102) .

Senecio cuencanus (Hieronymus) var. tomentellus Hieronymus (1901: 632) , syn. nov. Type:—‘COLUMBIA: crescit in silvis densis declivium superiorum Andium Occidentalium regionis Popayan, alt. s. m. 2600–2800 m, mense Martio e Aprili florens ([F. C. Lehmann] L. n. 5963 ’ (holotype: B †, photo F 0BN015563!; lectotype: K 000497741 , designated by Calvo & Freire (2016: 124); isolectotypes: MO 714300 !).

Distribution and Habitat ( Fig. 5 ): — Senecio cuencanus occurs in montane forests and páramos of Ecuador and Colombia, at elevations of 2700–3400 m.

Notes:— Senecio cuencanus var. tomentella is here proposed as a synonym of S. cuencanus because it only differs from the type variety by its leaves with an arachnoid tomentum on the abaxial surface, the feature being variable in the material examined.

The collection F.C. Lehmann 5962, cited in the protologue of Senecio cuencanus var. tomentella , was not found. Nevertheless we were able to find F.C. Lehmann 5963, whose collection data match the protologue. We conclude that 5963 (not 5962) is the correct collection number. This is the only collection of S. cuencanus known from Colombia.
