Senecio anacephalus Grisebach (1879: 208) . Type:— ARGENTINA. Salta ‘ Nevado del Castillo , alt. 10–15000’ [19–23 Mar 1873, P.G. Lorentz & G. Hieronymus 91] (holotype: GOET 002018 !; isotypes: CORD 00006519 !, F 0BN015512!, G 00342413 !, LP 002323 !).

Distribution and Habitat ( Fig. 5 ): — Senecio candollei occurs in the Andes of northwest Argentina, Bolivia, N of Chile and Peru, at elevations of 2300–4980 m.

Note: — Senecio candollei is highly variable in leaf shape and leaf margins, and the number of phyllaries. Senecio modestus is characterized in the protologue by spathulate-lanceolate leaves, solitary, discoid and nodding capitula. However, our analysis concludes that there are no constant characters to differentiate this species from S. candollei .
