Notes: — Even though a molecular analysis ( Pelser et al. 2007) shows Senecio comosus View in CoL as sister to S. culcitioides View in CoL , S. comosus View in CoL differs from species of S. ser. Culcitium View in CoL by its erect radiate capitula and echinate pollen. Further studies are required to determine the taxonomic position of S. comosus View in CoL .

Senecio comosus var. debilis and S. comosus var. blancus are proposed here as synonyms of S. comosus , since their characters traditionally considered diagnostic (oblong-lanceolate leaves 3 mm wide and denticulate margin in var. debilis and linear-oblong leaves, densely wooly abaxial face and revolute margin in var. blancus ) are not constant and appear in different combinations in the specimens, making the delimitation of these varieties unclear.
