Key to species of Tanymastigites Brtek, 1972

As already stated, it is not possible to distinguish females and cysts of all species of Tanymastigites because they are not or are insufficiently mentioned in some descriptions. Following the differential diagnosis, a dichotomous key to the adult males of the currently known species of Tanymastigites is proposed:

1 Lateral branch of antennal appendages undivided............................................................ 2

- Lateral branch of antennal appendages bifurcated............................................................ 3

2 Distal segment of antenna with a ventrolateral ridge approximately at the maximum point of curvature; basal part of penis with two distal mucronated divergent “lips”..................................................... T. lusitanica sp. nov.

- Distal segment of antenna without such a ventrolateral ridge; basal part of penis with the distal lateral “lip” as a big thornlike outgrowth pointing medially..................................................................... T. perrieri

3 Clypeus with dorsal and frontal processes................................................................. 4

- Clypeus without dorsal and frontal processes....................................................... T. mzabica

4 Dorsal processes as a pair of inconspicuous tubercles; frontal clypeal processes as a pair of prominent dorsoventrally flattened quadrangular plates........................................................................... T. cyrenaica

- Dorsal processes as a pair of conspicuous sclerotized tubercles, clearly exceeding the level of the fused basal part of antennal appendages; frontal clypeal processes as a pair of inconspicuous open U-shaped lamellae...................... T. brteki
