Taxonomy. Original description: Barbus kersin Heckel, 1843: 1049 View in CoL [59] [ Syria; syntypes: NMW 54212-13 (1, 4), 54215 (1); SMF 610 (ex NMW in 1844) (1), ZMB 3237 (ex NMW) (1)].— Iraq synonyms: None.—Revisions: None.—Illustration: Esmaeili (2021: 306, fig. 17.8).

Status in Iraq. First record from Iraq by Heckel (1843).—Iraq materials: None.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Iraq: Euphrates and Tigris River basins.—General distribution: Middle East: Euphrates and Tigris River basins ( Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran).—Habitat: This species inhabits large to medium sized rivers but habitats are poorly known. Freshwater.

Economic importance. Commercially important.

Conservation. Conservation Status in Iraq: Unknown.—IUCN: DD (IUCN 2023).—Threats: There are many threats in the area, but it is unknown how and if the species is affected.—Low sensitivity to human activities.— Keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
