Type locality: Lake Balaton , Keszthelyi lake bank (= SW end of lake), Hungary; approx. lat. 46 o 44’ 40” N, long. 17 o 14’ 50” E. GoogleMaps

Type specimens: Daday collection in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest: four dissected specimens on two slides (IV/P-7-8), both labelled “ Candona balatonica Daday, 1894 , n. sp. ” ( Forró et al. 1987). The c. 35 specimens from the Daday collection referred to as “ types ” by Meisch (2000) are not part of the original type series although they are from the type area of Lake Balaton and may therefore be regarded as topotypes (Claude Meisch, pers. comm. 4/10/2021).

Diagnosis: Female: carapace subtriangular in lateral outline, the valves left-right quasi-symmetrical in shape, both with the posterodorsal margin forming a single continuous, almost straight slope from the junction with the dorsal margin to the curve of the posterior extremity; posterodorsal flaps of both valves inconspicuous, without distinct lobate expansions; mandibular palp with five long setae on inner side of the second podomere.

Male: carapace outline in lateral view with a weakly convex (almost straight) posterodorsal outer margin segment; anteroventral bulbous flange short in both valves, not overhanging the ventral outer margin; mandibular palp with five long setae on inner side of the second podomere; right fifth limb endopodite with a short straight distal part forming a narrow acute gape angle (c. 40 o) with the proximal part; left fifth limb endopodite distal part with a wrinkled outer edge and forming an obtuse gape angle (c. 100 o) with the proximal part; hemipenis with trapezoidal, unilobate lateral lobe and an M process with a bilobate, boot-shaped termination.
