Ceratolejeunea ( Spruce 1884: 198) Schiffner (1893 ; 118, 125)
Ceratolejeunea renistipula Stephani (1895: 236) was listed, with doubt, for Queensland by McCarthy (2003). The nomenclatural history of this taxon is somewhat confusing. Ceratolejeunea renistipula was listed as a synonym of C. oceanica by Mizutani (1981) who noted that, while related to the southern African C. belangeriana (Gottsche in Gottsche et al. 1845: 398) Stephani (1913: 396), C. oceanica differed in its large underleaves, large trigones in leaf cell walls, and the presence of utricles on the branches. Ceratolejeunea oceanica ( Stephani 1923: 378) Horikawa (1943: 214) was in turn listed as a synonym of C. belangeriana by Grolle & Piippo (1984), and Zhu et al. (2005). Ceratolejeunea oceania (Stephani) Horikawa is a later homonym of Ceratolejeunea oceania (Mitten in Seaman) Stephani in Reinecke, but from a different basionym based on the same gathering. I confirm the presence of Ceratolejeunea for Queensland and on Norfolk Island, Australia using the name C. belangeriana .

Ceratolejeunea renistipula Stephani (1895: 236) .
Type:—TAHITI. Without more specific locality, M. Vesco 85 (G-11910!).
Specimens examined:— AUSTRALIA. Queensland: Cook District, Daintree National Park, Mossman Gorge , Rex Creek , above intersection with Rex Loop track, 16° 28’ S 145° 19’ E, 80 m, 10 July 2005, E. A GoogleMaps . Brown s.n. & M. A. M . Renner ( NSW887366 About NSW !); Norfolk Island, Robinson , ex herb. Steph. (G-011952!, BM!)
Distribution and ecology:— Confirmed for Australia, where known from Queensland and Norfolk Island. In Queensland C. belangeriana grew lithophytically on large boulders within the bed of a stream draining tropical rainforest, with Radula spp. and Lejeunea spp. Its habitat on Norfolk Island is not known.
Recognition:— Within the Australasian flora C. belangeriana is readily identified by its warm golden- brown colour, its large shallowly bifid, cordate underleaves, and by its distinctive perianths that bear four prominent horns. It may be confused with species of Lopholejeunea or Thysananthus due to its colour, particularly when sterile, however species in these genera have entire underleaves.
