Description. Very similar to Egle minuta but different as follows: Slightly larger, wing length 3.2–4.4 mm.

Male. Parafacial broader, about same width as postpedicel. Lower facial margin strongly projected, reaching further beyond fronto-parafacial angle. Genal setae more abundant, in three irregular rows. Hind leg ( Fig. 145 View FIGURES 144–145 ). Terminalia ( Figs. 158–163 View FIGURES 158–163 ): Sternite V with setulae along incised hind margin relatively long and uninterrupted; basal plate with 0–1 short setula postero-laterally. Epandrium smaller, without setulae on lateral parts (as in E. lyneborgi and E. suwai ). Surstyli narrow-based alongside margins of cerci (as in E. lyneborgi and E. suwai ). Apical extension of cerci more constricted basally. Pregonite distinctly wider than long. Phallus with shorter and distally less inflated epiphallus.

Female. Lower facial margin more strongly produced beyond fronto-parafacial angle. Genal setae in 1–2 rows. Proepimerals 3–4. Setulae on lower part of katepisternum unremarkable, not particularly fine and dense. Hind femur with some very short pv-setae on basal half; fine v-seta near base of hind femur usually longer than preapical d-seta on hind tibia. Oviscapt ( Figs. 200–202 View FIGURES 200–202 ): Sternite VII narrow but usually sclerotized even on middle part. Epiproct not divided along mid-line.

Material examined. European specimens seem from BRITISH ISLES, CZECH REPUBLIC, DENMARK, FINLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, NORWAY and SWEDEN. TURKEY [ ZMUC]: Bursa: Uludaǧ National Park , 1500–1800m, on flowering Salix , 2 males, 11 females 9.v.1993 ( V. Michelsen) .

Biology. In Denmark, and probably elsewhere in the lowlands of northern Europe, one of the earliest and most abundant species of Egle on Goat willow ( Salix caprea L.), Grey willow ( Salix cinerea L.) and other early-flowering willows. I have found it on Eared willow ( Salix aurita L.) in south Sweden as Karl (1934) did in Poland.

Distribution. Widespread in boreal parts of the Palaearctic Region, but at least in Fennoscandia apparently not reaching beyond or above the tree line. European distribution as summarized by Michelsen (2004): Belgium, British Isles, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland. Also from Crimea ( Ukraine) according to Elberg (1970). Presently recorded for the first time from Turkey. The eastern Palaearctic distribution includes northern China: Liaoning, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Gansu ( Hua 2006), Korea (Suh & Kwon 1985) and Japan ( Suwa 1999). Not present in North America as confirmed by Griffiths (2003).

Relationships. Egle parva , the type species of the genus Egle , belongs to the E. minuta species group within the E. minuta section (see above).
