Agrilus bespencus Barr , n. sp.

Diagnosis. Recognition features for this species include the green coloration of the front of the head of the male, a shallow median depression, on the front of the head, the irregularly present, faint medial and sublateral depressions of the pronotum, the nearly straight prehumeral carinae and the first abdominal segment being finely, densely granulose medially.

Male. small, subcylindrical, moderately shining head dark green in front and dark coppery on occiput; pronotum black with an aeneous tinge medially and a coppery tinge laterally; elytra black with a coppery tinge on basal half and an aeneous tinge on apical half; ventral surface dark coppery, except prosternum nearly black. Head broad, evenly, weakly convex, except for a shallow, median depression; front with surface finely, densely granulose and finely punctate, sparsely clothed with very short, white setae that do not obscure surface; occiput evenly rounded, surface finely, longitudinally rugose, glabrous; epistoma with front margin broadly, shallowly and subtriangularly emarginate; clypeal suture not evident; antennae extending along lateral margin to middle of pronotum, segments 5 to 10 triangularly serrate; eyes large, with inner margin slightly sinuate when viewed from the front. Pronotum broader across frontal third than midline length, about equal in width across front angles and hind angles; surface moderately convex, with a faint elongate depression in front of middle, a moderately deep, circular depression behind middle and with a distinct, oblique sublateral depression at about middle, disc transversely rugose, becoming obliquely and anteriorly oriented sublaterally, pubescence consisting of short, sparsely placed, subdepressed white hairs, except for a small oblique concentration of appressed, coarser white setae at front angles; prehumeral carina cristate, commencing sublaterally and subapically, extending in a nearly straight line to hind angle. Scutellum longer than broad; surface reticulate, irregularly, transversely carinate; front margin slightly arcuate; hind margin prolonged, narrowly triangular. Elytra slightly more than three times longer than basal width across humeri (3.42: 1.12 mm.); basal width subequal to greatest width of pronotum; sides, in dorsal view, shallowly bisinuate, being slightly expanded on basal fourth, gradually narrowing to basal third, gradually expanded to apical fourth, then narrowing to the separately rounded, serrulate apices; basal depressions paired, shallow and subcircular, without a concentration of appressed, coarse white setae; surface finely granulate and microsculptured, also, when viewed posteriorly from above head, the surface shows densely placed, transverse strigations. Prosternum with front margin shallowly emarg-inate; surface rather deeply, transversely grooved and very finely, densely punctate behind emargination, sparsely pubescent. Metasternum finely, densely granulate and with a short, linear, median impression; coxa with hind margin shallowly emarginate and with subrectangular outer apical angle narrowly rounded. Abdomen dull coppery beneath; first segment with a slight median depression and with surface finely, densely granulose; vertical portions of segments inconspicuously pubescent; pygidium with a median carina which does not project hind margin. Total Length: 4.82 mm. Male Genitalia slender ( Fig. 5 ), very similar to those of A. celti Knull and A. parapubescens Knull.

Etymology. This new name, bespencus , is an anagram of the name pubescens .

Comments. The only major variation noted for this species involves the hind coxae, the hind margin of which, shows variations from an evenly, shallowly and arcuately emarginate condition to a distinctly bisinuately emarginate condition. This species runs to A. pubescens in Fisher's 1928 key.
