Epitype (designated here)— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Quinta de São Christovão, plante cultivée originaire de la prov. d’ Espirito Santo, 8 November 1876 (ster.), A.F.M. Glaziou 5704 (P [P02198812]!, isoepitype C!).

Note:— Calathea makoyana was described and based on a collection by Mr. Emile Wittig, a gardener in Rio de Janeiro, and staff member of Jacob-Makoy Company in Brazil ( Morren 1872: 321). It is reported as being native to Cachoeira do Cravo, at that time located in Minas Gerais State. Today this region belongs to Espírito Santo State, in the vicinity of São Mateus municipality. However, the species in unknown in the wild—only herbarium collections of cultivated material were found and analyzed. Even though the collection Glaziou 5704 is a cultivated material, its label stated the origin as Espírito Santo State, and therefore was chosen as epitype. This species was named after Mr. Jacob-Makoy.
