Neotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Bahia. Alcobaça: ramal para Santo Antonio , 24 January 1972 (fl.), R.S. Pinheiro 1763 (CEPEC!, isoneotype GB!).

= Maranta pinnato-picta W. Bull (1875: 7) View in CoL

Note:—The name Calathea applicata View in CoL was first published by Morren in 1874, followed by a short description of the leaves. Later, Morren (1875d: 273) clarifies the identity of this species by providing a more complete description and a plate. This species morphologically resembles C. makoyana View in CoL in leaf ornamentation. Nevertheless, Morren (1875d: 273) highlights the indument on the petiole and pulvine, features that distinguishes C. applicata View in CoL from the latter. The collection here chosen as neotype presents all characters indicated by Morren in the protologue. The epithet applicata View in CoL means the absence of plicate leaves; the leaf blades of this species are somewhat waved.

The chosen neotype for Maranta pinnato-picta features the characteristics described by Bull (1875: 7) in his detailed description of leaf blade ornamentation. This name was considered a synonym under Calathea applicata by Jacob-Makoy (1875: 822).
