Aeschynomene americana Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 713. 1753.
"Habitat in Jamaica." RCN: 5489.
Lectotype (Howard, Fl. Lesser Antilles 4: 443. 1988): [icon] " Hedysarum caule hirsuto, mimosae foliis alatis, pinnis acutis minimis gramineis" in Sloane, Voy. Jamaica 1: 186, t. 118, f. 3. 1707. - Typotype: Herb. Sloane 3: 90 ( BM-SL) .
Current name: Aeschynomene americana L. View in CoL View at ENA ( Fabaceae : Faboideae ).
Note: Although some authors (e.g. Fawcett & Rendle, Fl. Jamaica 4: 27. 1920; Rudd in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 32: 24. 1955) have treated Sloane material (BM) as the type, it was not seen by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name. Howard appears to have been the first to explicitly treat Sloane’s illustration as the type (which is, however, linked to Sloane’s specimen).
