DISTRIBUTION: Indo-West Pacific, eastern Pacific.

REMARKS: The wide range of vertebral counts suggests that more than one species may be involved. Further studies are needed.

DISTRIBUTION: Western Atlantic.

REMARKS: The original type locality for Muraenophis macularia was Barbados. The specimen selected for the neotype is the same as the holotype of Uropterygius diopus .

REMARKS: The Hawaiian population, described as U. dentatus , has a much higher vertebral count (116, 122, 136 in the holotype of dentatus ) than those from elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific (101, 105, 122 in the holotype of supraforatus ). Uropterygius dentatus might be a valid species.
