Scatella bullacosta Cresson, 1934: 219 View in CoL . Type locality: Tainan, Taiwan.

Diagnosis. Oral seta shorter than width of antennal segment 3. Wing brownish with five faint hyaline spots, first costal section greatly thickened in male.

Description. Male body length 2.0– 2.1 mm, wing length 1.7–1.9 mm.

Head subshiny black, with thin rusty pollen; mesofrons nearly polished with brownish red pollen. Setulae and setae on head black; 1 outer vt as long as 1 inner vt; 1 pair of strong oc; 4 lateroclinate orb, the first and the third thin and short. Protruding face black with rusty dense pollen, with 2 long dorsoclinate facial setae on each side. Vibrissa very strong. Antenna black; arista short pubescent. Eye­to­cheek ratio, male 1: 0.33.

Thorax subshining black; mesonotum brownish yellow microtomentose. Setulae and setae on thorax black. Pres dc short; no posts acr, a pair of strong acr just anterior of suture; 1 strong humeral seta; anterior npl longer than posterior npl; 1 psa longer than sa; scutellum with 2 pairs of sc, lateral sc small; mesopleuron with 1 long seta; sternopleuron with 1 strong seta on upper portion. Legs subshiny black with grey pollen; tarsi brown. Setulae and setae on leg black. Fore femur with row of pv nearly as long as width of fore femur. Wing brownish with five faint hyaline spots, first costal section greatly thickened in male. Halter yellowish.

Abdomen subshining black with brown pollen. Male T2, T3, T4 and T5 ratio: 1.3: 1.7: 2.0: 2.9.

Male genitalia ( Figs. 2–8 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ). Cercus thick and short; surstylus without inner incision at tip in posterior view; gonite narrow at base; phallapodeme moderately long.

Female. Body length 2.5 mm, wing length 2.2 mm. Female genitalia ( Figs. 9–10 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ).Ventral receptacle long, tube­like, about 4.5 times as long as wide.

Specimens examined. 2 males, Guangdong: Zengcheng, Nankunshan, 12. 0 5. 2004, leg. Ding Yang; 5 males, Guangxi: Leye, 29. 0 7. 2004, leg. Xingyue Liu; 5 males, Guangxi: Leye, Huaping, 27. 0 7. 2004, leg. Xingyue Liu; 5 females, Guangxi: Leye, 29. 0 7. 2004, leg. Xingyue Liu; 5 females, Guangxi: Leye, Huaping, 27. 0 7. 2004, leg. Xingyue Liu.

Distribution. China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan), Taiwan.

Remarks. This species which was described by Cresson (1934) from Taiwan is recorded from the Chinese mainland for the first time. It is somewhat similar to Scatella obsoleta Loew , but may be separated from the latter by the epandrium with the long dense hairs at apex and the phallapodeme broad at apex in the anterior view. In S. obsoleta , the epandrium has the short sparse hairs, and the phallapodeme is narrow at apex in the anterior view ( Olafsson, 1991).
