Euhylaeogena Hespenheide , new genus ( Figs. 3 View Figs , 10, 11 View Figs )
Type Species. Euhylaeogena byattae Hespenheide , new species, by present designation.
Diagnosis. Similar to Pachyschelus , obovate, convex above, flattened below, but mandibles visible, vertical in lateral view, and not covered by prosternal lobe; front with epistoma transverse or only very shallowly emarginate, the ventral margin completely carinate, antennal depressions usually narrowly separated by raised V-shaped ridge, antennal insertions within antennal foveae lateral to large pore; deep arcuate grooves above antennal foveae, each with two pores and converging medially ( Fig. 3 View Figs ), pronotum without prehumeral carinae; dorsal surface variable, glabrous or with sparse, inconspicuous setae, or with denser setae in distinct patterns.
Euhylaeogena is a moderately large genus with at least 60 species known to me in Central America. Bellamy (2008) listed 106 names for the genus Hylaeogena (sensu lato) and the total number of species will easily exceed that when all forms are described, as most South American species described in or transferred to Hylaeogena will belong here. Several rather distinctive lineages are apparent in material from Central America which will be discussed in a future publication.
