Euhylaeogena clbellamyi Hespenheide , new species
( Figs. 10, 11 View Figs )
Description. Holotype male. Oval, narrower behind than in front, weakly rounded-convex when viewed from side, moderately shiny and glabrous; head golden green becoming coppery golden on vertex, pronotum golden coppery red, more golden on anterior and lateral margins, scutellum black, elytra dark blue, black beneath; length 2.05 mm, width 1.35 mm. ( Fig. 11 View Figs ). Head: Width 0.70 mm wide, front transverse, narrowly rounded at eyes; surface sparsely punctate, intervals polished; epistoma carinate along base, width between antennal depressions about 1/4 distance between eyes; antennae inserted on inner 1/2 of antennal depressions, compact; arcuate groove above each antennal depression, grooves convergent in V between antennal depressions and above epistoma. Pronotum: Convex, widest at base, slightly less than 3-1/2X wider than long at middle; sides weakly rounded from base to apical angles; anterior margin undulate with shallow lobe at middle; base nearly transverse, extending slightly obliquely backward to elytral lobe where it is slightly emarginate, then transverse anterior to scutellum; posterior angles broadly acute, almost subquadrate; surface weakly ocellatepunctate on disk. Scutellum: Triangular, 1-3/4X wider than long, surface weakly shagreened. Elytra: Slightly wider than pronotum at base and widest at basal 1/3; humeral angles subquadrate; humeri weak, each elytron with very slight depression at base interior to humerus, and narrow depression between humerus and lateral margin for basal 1/2, broader behind humerus; surface distinctly punctate, punctures in rows. Venter: With scattered minute setae, weakly shagreened and inconspicuously ocellate punctate, punctures open behind and nearly obsolete on abdominal ventrites. Prosternum shallowly emarginate in front; prosternal process moderately broad, slightly expanded behind coxae and rounded at apex; antennal groove in hypomeron narrow and deep, arising behind middle of anterior margin of hypomeron, straight, and extending 1/2 way to posterior angle. Apex of terminal abdominal ventrite with row of setae. Genitalia: As in Fig. 10 View Figs .
Allotype Female. There are no obvious differences from the male; antennae with antennomeres 7–11 broader, triangular; length 2.20 mm.
Type Material. Holotype: MEXICO: Sinaloa, 10.8 mi SE Walamo , 05.07.1987, C. L. Bellamy (52278.7) ( CNIN) . Allotype: Same data as holotype ( CSCA) . Paratypes: Same data as holotype (10, BMNH, CHAH, CSCA) ; 26 mi NE Villa Union , 07.07.1962, E. Sleeper, R. Anderson, A. Hardy, R. Somerby (4, CHAH, CSCA) ; nr. Mazatlan , 18.07.1984, B. K. Dozier (1, FSCA) ; 29 mi S Culiacan , 23.06.1963, J. Doyen (3, EMEC) .
Etymology. The species is named for C. L. Bellamy who collected the holotype, allotype, and many of the paratypes.
Discussion. This species is very similar to Euhylaeogena grouvellei (Théry, 1934) , but the latter has a distinct impression along the midline of the front; is less strongly punctate on the pronotum; has a patch of moderately dense and long setae along midline of abdominal ventrites 1–2; the groove in the pronotal epipleura for the antennae reaches almost to the posterior angles; and male genitalia differ. The host is unknown. Because sexes are difficult to distinguish, measurements of all specimens, with sexes combined, vary from 1.90–2.25 mm long (mean = 2.11 mm, n = 20).
KEY TO THE GENERA OF PACHYSCHELIDINA
1. In repose, mandibles covered by prosternal lobe; epistoma triangular, flat, ventral margin not emarginate or carinate; single complete transverse groove above antennal insertions with large pore interior to margins of eyes; pronotum without prehumeral carinae............ .................................................. Pachyschelus View in CoL
1′. In repose, mandibles visible, not covered by prosternal lobe; epistoma variable, but not triangular and flat, ventral margin emarginate or carinate; with or without separate grooves above antennal insertions, not single and complete, if separate grooves, with pores at each end of groove; pronotum with or without prehumeral carinae...........................................2
2. Pronotum without prehumeral carinae; ventral margin of epistoma transverse or only shallowly emarginate, completely carinate; antennae inserted in distinct foveae, narrowly separated ................................................... Euhylaeogena
2′. Pronotum with prehumeral carinae; ventral margin of epistoma more or less deeply emarginate, only partially carinate below antennal insertions; antennae inserted in distinct foveae or not, widely separated...............................3
3. Front with antennae inserted in distinct foveae, short arcuate groove above each antennal fovea with 2 pores and antennal fovea with third pore; prehumeral carina of pronotum weak; setae on pronotum and elytra variable, largely dense with relatively small glabrous areas or apparently glabrous........................ Hylaeogena View in CoL
3′. Front with antennae not inserted in distinct foveae, 3 pores above or just interior to each antennal insertion, not in grooves; prehumeral carina of pronotum strong; setae on pronotum and elytra condensed in distinct lines and patches and forming designs ........ Hedwigiella
