Salix leveilleana auct. Chou et al. (1984: 312) non C.K. Schneider (1916: 176).
Salix leveilleana auct. Mao et al. (1995: 555) non C.K. Schneider (1916: 176).

Shrubs or small trees. Branches erect, brownish red or yellow-green, glabrous; branchlets erect, green, glabrous. Buds glabrous, up to 1.4 cm. Stipules lanceolate, 0.3–1.2 cm, glabrous, glandular serrulate. Petiole 0.2–1.3 cm, glabrous; leaf blade lanceolate, elliptic-lanceolate, 4.3–12.3 × 0.7–2.1 cm, abaxially glaucous (juvenile leaves pilose), glabrous, adaxially dark green, glabrous, base cuneate, margin glandular serrulate, apex acute; veins protruding adaxially and abaxially. Catkins just before leaves emerge, arising from lateral buds, densely flowered; male catkin stout, 1.8–3.5 × 1.2–1.5 cm; peduncle 0.2–0.3 cm, with 2–5 leaflets at base; female catkin at maturity up to 3.9 cm; peduncle 0.1–0.4 cm, with 1–5 leaflets; floral bract bicolor, obovate, 1.5–3.3 mm, villous, apex rounded. Male flower: adaxial nectary ovate, 0.5–0.7 mm, abaxial nectary absent; stamens 2, connate throughout or only filaments united, 4–6.6 mm, glabrous or pilose; anthers reddish. Female flower: adaxial nectary ovate, 0.4–0.7 mm, shorter than stipe, abaxial nectary absent; stipe 1.2–2.8 mm, ovary ovate-elliptic, glabrous, ovary beak abruptly tapering to style; styles 0.6–1.1 mm, slightly distinct at distal end; stigmas 2 lobed. Capsules to 3.4 mm, glabrous.
Phenology:—Flowering in March, and fruiting in April and May.
Habitat:—Streamsides; 357–1300 m a.s.l.
Distribution:—Central and Eastern China (Anhui, southern Henan, eastern Hubei, southeastern Hunan, western Jiangxi and northwestern Zhejiang).
Note: —The author’s herbarium and literature research revealed that the specimens labeled as Salix leveilleana in LBG and CSFI are actually S. baileyi . Hence, the identification of S. baileyi ( Chou et al. 1984; Mao et al. 1995; Lai 2014) as S. leveilleana was an error. S. baileyi differs from S. leveilleana by its bicolor floral bracts, glabrous and ovate-elliptic ovary and the abrupt tapering of the ovary to the style ( Table 1).
and examined specimens.
Chao (1985) corrected the misapplication by Chou et al. based on the protologues of Salix baileyi and S. leveilleana but did not revise the descriptions of S. baileyi accordingly. Fang et al. (1999) omitted Chao’s work and attempted to correct the misapplication. However, the descriptions to Fang et al. ’s S. baileyi are based on the specimens of S. baileyi and S. leveilleana .
The author found two unrecorded populations of Salix baileyi in Daxiagu, Zhejiang Province, and collected the male plant for the first time. Furthermore, J.J. Zhou & G.X. Feng 17041616 (CSFI) and W.K. Liu 33716 (CSFI) were collected from Yanling County, a new distribution area for this species in Hunan. Based on this work, the descriptions of S. baileyi have been revised, and its distribution area amended to include also Hunan and Zhejiang.
