Yunnan: Qiaojia County, Qiaomaidi Town (Yaoshan Town), 3000 m, April 1912, E.E. Maire s.n. (holotype E-00301599!, ♀).—For image of the lectotype, see Fig. 2D View FIGURE 2 .
Shrubs or trees to 14.5 m. Branchlets russet, blackish brown, or greenish brown, at first tomentose, glabrescent. Buds russet or chestnut colored, ovoid, glabrous, angled, apex acute, recurved. Stipules small, semicordate; petiole 0.5–1.5 (–1.9) cm, tomentose; leaf blade elliptic-oblong, ovate-oblong, oblong-lanceolate, ovate-oblong, or narrowly elliptic, 4.3–9.1 (–14.1) × 2.2–3.6 (–4.6) cm, 1.3–2.7 (3.5) cm times as long as wide, abaxially glaucous, sparsely short-silky, densely tomentose, or subglabrous, reddish when young, adaxially with filamentous hairs at first, glabrescent, smooth, margin usually entire (serrulate on shoots), apex acute to acuminate. Catkins just before leaves emerge or as leaves emerge; male catkin stout, 1.9–4.9 (–5.4) × (0.6–) 0.9–1.9 cm; peduncle 0.2–1 cm, with 1–5 leaflets at base; female catkin (fruiting catkin), 4–12.4 × 0.8–2.2 (–2.6); peduncle 0.5–1.8 cm, with 1–5 leaflets; floral bract brown to blackish brown, narrowly oblong or obovate, pilose, apex acute. Male flower: nectary 1, ovate-rectangular; stamens 2; filaments distinct, 5–6 (–7.5) mm, slender, distinctly glabrous or downy at base; anthers yellow, ellipsoid, large. Female flower: nectary 1, ovate-rectangular, shorter than stipe; stipe ca. 0.7 (4) mm, ovary narrowly conical, 3–4 mm, pubescent, rarely puberulent at base, ovary beak gradually tapering to style; styles to 1.1 mm; stigmas 2–4 - lobed. Capsules to 9 mm, pilose, rarely subglabrous; stipe elongate, ca. as long as bracts; valves revolute.
Phenology: Flowering mid-March to early June, and fruiting from April to June.
Habitat: Mountain slopes, margins of woods, riversides; 600–3700 m a.s.l.
Distribution: Southern China (SE Gansu, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Xizang, Yunnan, Zhejiang); Bhutan, India, Nepal.
Note: —After detailed examination of the type specimen of Salix leveilleana , the author did not support Chao’s treatment of S. dolia var. leveilleana (C.K. Schneider) N. Chao because it differs from S. dolia (= S. rehderiana ) by its glaucous abaxial leaf blade, ovate-rectangular female flower nectary and shorter nectary than stipe ( Table 1). The type specimen of S. leveilleana fit the descriptions of S. disperma Roxb. ex D. Don (1825: 58) ( Table 1). Therefore, S. leveilleana and S. dolia var. leveilleana are here synonymized under S. disperma .
