Type:— VENEZUELA. T. F. Amazonas: Depto. Río Negro, inundated forest along lower Río Baria, G. Davidse 27717 (holotype, MO).

Note:—The fossil-species Persea fluviatilis Mai (1971: 317) , based on the fossil fruits from the European Eocene sediments of Haselbach (Thuringia, Germany), is a senior homonym of the extant species, Persea fluviatilis van der Werff (1989: 474) ; therefore, a new replacement name is introduced for extant species.

Eponymy:—In honour of H. van der Werff, discoverer of the species.
