Urubaxia tricolor (Distant, 1909) View in CoL

( Figures 1–10 View FIGURES 1 – 10 , 33 View FIGURE 33 )

Hyboscarta tricolor Distant, 1909: 190 View in CoL ; Metcalf, 1961: 507. Urubaxia tricolor Fennah, 1968: 184 View in CoL .

Measurements. Total length, 9.07 ± 0.15 (8.25–9.75); length of pronotum, 2.85 ± 0.05 (2.64–3.10); length of tegmina, 7.55 ± 0.11 (6.90–8.00); width of tegmina, 2.4 ± 0.06 (2.10–2.60).

Diagnose. Head, pronotum and scutellum orange-red; tegmina with basal third orange-red, costal and apical margins until the beginning of clavus brownish, median and posterior third translucent.

Description. Head orange-red ( Figs 1–2 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ), second and third rostral segments black; compound eyes black, rounded, arranged transversely; vertex smooth and rectangular, lacking median carina; ocelli black, closer to each other than to compound eyes; tylus smooth and rectangular, lacking median carina; antennae black, each pedicel sparsely setose, basal body of flagellum ovoid as long as wide, bearing one arista shorter than pedicel; postclypeus orange-red, inflated, convex in profile, with one longitudinal carina strongly marked, lateral grooves strongly marked; rostrum extending to mesocoxae. Thorax orange-red, basal area of mesosternum black, pronotum orangered, hexagonal, lacking median carina; anterior margin of pronotum straight, antero-lateral margins straight, postero-lateral margins slightly sinuous, posterior margin grooved; scutellum reddish with slight concavity centrally, lacking horizontal grooves; tegmina with basal third orange-red, costal and apical margins until the beginning of clavus brownish, median and posterior third translucent; apical reticulation slightly developed; hindwings hyaline with brownish venation, vein Cu1 abruptly thickened at base; legs orange-red, tibiae and tarsomeres black; metathoracic tibia with two lateral spines (basal spine smaller than spines in apical crown; apical spine larger than spines in apical crown); apical crown of spines on each tibia consisting of two rows; two rows of spines covered by setae on basitarsus; subungueal process present, triangular. Abdomen: pale to orange-red.

Male. Pygofer brownish, with a finger-like process between anal tube and subgenital plates ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ); subgenital plates long, wide at base and narrowing toward its apex, free for almost all its length ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ), with a short spinelike process on the inner margin medially ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ); paramere slender, with a dorsal spine pointed upwards and a median spine pointed downwards ( Figs 5–6 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ), both spines sclerotized; aedeagus robust with a straight shaft, slightly enlarged at base, covered by small scale-like spines ( Figs 7–8 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ).

Female. First valvulae of ovipositor long, slender and acute apically, bearing a rounded, basal process, slightly elongated and directed downwards ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ); second valvulae long, with apical third of dorsal margin serrate ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ); third valvulae short and wide, with long ventral setae.

Distribution. Brazil (Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul) ( Fig. 33 View FIGURE 33 ).

Remarks. An exclusive characteristic of U. tricolor is the shape of the subgenital plates in ventral view: the base of the plate is larger and narrows abruptly toward the apex than in other congeneric species.
