Genetic data. BIN: BOLD:AAH8490 (n=10 from Ethiopia; maximum variation 0.8%); nearest species: Z. melpomene (3.4%). One other specimen of Z. excavata from Ethiopia (BC ZSM Lep 14827) clustering with the West African BIN ( BOLD:AAH8466; n=16 from Cameroon, Guinea, Sao Tomé and Principe, Angola) of the nominotypical subspecies and diverging by 4.6 % from the Ethiopian BIN of subsp. pollex , probably due to genetic introgression.

Distribution. Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia ( Fletcher 1974; De Prins & De Prins 2019). New for Sao Tomé and Principe. The subspecies Z. excavata pollex is endemic to Ethiopia.

Remarks. In male genitalia, the aedeagus is characteristic for the subspecies pollex, distinguished by the short length of the acicular projection arising from two-thirds aedeagus ( Fletcher 1974); apex of valva variable.
