4. Cleoserrata serrata (Jacquin) Iltis View in CoL (in Iltis & Cochrane 2007: 448)

Cleome serrata Jacquin (1760: 26) View in CoL .

Neocleome serrata (Jacquin) Small (1933: 577) View in CoL .

Type :— JAMAICA. N. J. von Jacquin s.n. (lectotype, designated here: BM 000589710 !; isolecotypes: BM 000573986 !, BM 000573987 !) .

Cleome polygama Linnaeus (1763: 939) View in CoL . Type:— JAMAICA. Brown 272 (lectotype designated by Fawcett & Rendle 1914: 225: LINN 850.7 [image!]).

Cleome polygama Linnaeus var. isophylla Urban (1907: 345) View in CoL . Type:— CUBA. La Magdalena-Cayamas, F.S. Earle & C.F. Baker 2452 (holotype: B 100088705).

Cleome indecora Liebmann View in CoL (in Schouw 1845: 3). Type:— Liebm 3195 (holotype: C 10009061 [image!])

Cleome ternata Willdenow View in CoL nom. nud. in synon. (in Martius 1865: 257).

Cleoserrata serrata View in CoL is morphologically close to C. paludosa View in CoL , differing from the latter by having a short gynophore (vs. long gynophore) and by the membrane of the seed opening cleft being smooth and shining, and not covered by swollen and diminutive cells (vs. membrane of the seed opening cleft opaque, covered by bulliform, densely packed, diminutive cells distributed around the testa).

Distribution and habit: — Cleoserrata serrata is distributed from Mexico trough Central America and the West Indies ( Jamaica, Cuba), Colombia, Surinam, and Guyana ( Iltis & Cochrane 2007).

Notes: — Iltis and Cochrane (2007) list for the type: “ Colombia: Cartagena, N. J. von Jacquin s.n. (holotype: BM)”. However, the BM specimens are clearly marked as being collected in Jamaica, and the name was published in a work on Caribbean plants. For these reasons we believe the type information of Iltis and Cochrane (2007) to be an error. We chose the material BM 000589710 as the lectotype, as that specimen is most complete, with flowers and fruits, and demonstrates the characteristics most relevant to the recognition of the species, while the specimens BM 000573986 and BM 000573987 bear only fruits.
