Maxomys alticola (Thomas 1888) View in CoL
[Maxomys] alticola (Thomas 1888) View in CoL , Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 6, 2: 408.
Type Locality: Malaysia, Sabah (N Borneo), Mt Kinabalu ("from a high level").
Vernacular Names: Bornean Mountain Maxomys.
Synonyms: Maxomys kinabaluensis (Chasen 1937) .
Distribution: Known only from two mountains in Sabah, N Borneo: from 1070 to 3360 on Mt Kinabalu ( Md Nor, 2001), and also on Gunung Trus Madi.
Conservation: IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: The name alticola was once applied to populations from lower elevations on Gunung Kinabalu , the Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra ( Chasen, 1940), but was shown to be the name for a distinct species endemic to mountains of Sabah ( Medway, 1964, 1977). Reviewed by Corbet and Hill (1992). Part of a suite of murine species endemic to Borneo (Musser, 1986; also see account of Chiropodomys major ).
