Material examined. Holotype male, North Queensland, 17°05’S 145°35’E, Mt Haig, 22 km NE by N of Atherton, 16 March 1988, D.C.P. Rentz.

Diagnosis. This species resembles O. morula Wells and O. alveata Wells that were assigned to the Orthotrichia morula Group by Wells (1979). It differs from them in that tergite X is almost twice the length of the inferior appendages, and the well-developed process on abdominal sternite VII is absent. Orthotrichia rentzi is distinguished by inferior appendages fused in the basal half and rounded laterally, rather than irregular in shape as in O. morula Wells or completely discrete as in O. alveata Wells.

Description. Male: Anterior wing length 3.1 mm. Antennae damaged. Male genitalia ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7, 8 ): Abdominal tergite VIII with single lateral spine on right, parallel with margin. Segment IX broad, slightly produced posterolaterally. Tergite X membranous, rounded apically. Inferior appendages fused in proximal half, divided distally by parallel-sided cleft; dorsal process fused, asymmetrical; ventral apodeme shorter than length of inferior appendages, slender. The aedeagus is of the usual form for the genus, slender, with a thin tittilator but without any spines or processes. Paramere slightly sinuous, broader distally than proximally.

Etymology. Named for David Rentz, who has donated large numbers of Trichoptera specimens to Australian collections.
