status

Cassia javanica Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 1: 379. 1753 View Cited Treatment .

"Habitat in India." RCN: 2981.

Lectotype (de Wit in Webbia 11:215. 1956): [icon] " Cassia fistula Javanica flore carneo" in Commelin, Hort. Med. Amstelod. Pl. Rar. 1: 217, t. 111. 1697.

Current name: Cassia javanica L. subsp. javanica View in CoL ( Fabaceae : Caesalpinioideae ).

Note: De Wit (in Webbia 11: 215. 1956) indicated the cited Commelin plate as the type. No specimens were available for typification and de Wit (l.c.: 219-220), believing that the Amsterdam Code then in force might preclude the use of illustrations as types, also designated a neotype for this (and other) names "for pre-Linnaean descriptions when type material (Art. 18) proved to be absent". This procedure is not dissimilar to the use of epitypes, introduced much later, but de Wit’s intention that the primary type was the Commelin illustration seems clear, and is accepted here.
