Family Xiangxiellidae Shen in Chang et al., 1976

Remarks. Xiangxiellidae was defined as a subfamily in Chang et al. (1976) and attributed therein to the family Vertexiidae Kobayashi, 1954 . Carapace valves of Vertexiidae have concavely recurved growth lines along the upper posterior margin below the dorsal margin, and sometimes a spine-like sculpture on its larval carapace valve ( Kobayashi 1954; Astrop & Hegna 2015). These two characteristics are absent in Xiangxiellinae, which excludes this taxon from the family Vertexiidae sensu stricto. Instead, Xiangxiellidae became elevated to family rank by Kozur & Weems (2010), which is followed herein.
