Genus Hemicladus Buquet, 1857 View in CoL
Hemicladus Buquet, 1857: 328 View in CoL ; Thomson, 1860: 43, 73; Thomson, 1864: 124, 401 (type species designation); Lacordaire, 1872: 906; Gemminger & Harold, 1873: 3214 (Catalogue); Aurivillius, 1923: 599 (Catalogue); Fuchs, 1955: 53 (Key); Galileo & Martins, 1991: 249 (Key); Monné, 1995: 81 (Catalogue); Monné, 2005: 330 (Catalogue). Type species: Hemicladus dejeanii Buquet, 1857 View in CoL , by the designation of Thomson, 1864: 124.
Diagnosis. Length 8-18 mm. Claw divaricated. Pronotum broader than long, with a small, more or less spiny tubercle on the middle of each lateral margin. Mesosternum with one or two tubercles. Antennae elevensegmented, of about the same length as the body of the male and the female (from apex of mandibles to apex of elytra). Scape with a notch at the apical external margin. Antennomere 3 is the longest segment (equal to the length of the scape in some species) and is slightly indented at the apex; antennomere 4 is more noticeably indented and is flattened; antennomeres 5 to 7 are completely flattened and project at the apex; antennomere 8 is variable; the last three antennomeres are cylindrical and of nearly equal length. Scutellum small. Elytra elongated, convex and rounded at the apex.
Hemicladus Buquet View in CoL is closely related to the genus Eumimesis Bates View in CoL : both share the flattened antennomeres that are projected at the apex. In Eumimesis View in CoL , only antennomere 5, sometimes 5 and 6, are expanded, whereas in Hemicladus View in CoL antennomeres 4 to 7 are expanded. The distinction between the two genera is narrow and the species Hemicladus fasciatus Galileo & Martins, 1991 View in CoL shows intermediate antennal features. In a broader revision of the Calliini View in CoL , which is beyond the scope of this article, a more inclusive generic concept may be considered.
