* Myliobatis aquila (Linnaeus, 1758) —Common eagle ray

Pteromylaeus bovinus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817) —Bull ray

Recorded by Maul (1949). No specimen in the MMF collection but record confirmed by underwater photos by the first author.

* Manta birostris (Walbaum, 1792) —Giant manta

Mobula mobular (Bonnaterre, 1788) — Devil fish

This species was recorded from Madeira by several authors including Maul (1949), Nunes (1974: 236), and Wirtz (1994: 20). However, the species Mobula tarapacana (Philipi, 1893) could also be present in Madeira waters. The identity of the Madeira Mobula species needs checking.
