Rhincodon typus Smith, 1828 —Whale shark
Whale sharks have been seen by SCUBA divers at the south coast of Madeira in 2003 and 2004 but the species has apparently not previously been recorded from there. The descriptions by the divers leave no doubt as to the identification of the species and several of these divers had seen whale sharks previously in tropical areas.
