Diagnosis. Macrostomus is a genus characterized by having a dichoptic head, one or two pairs of ocellar setae, thorax and abdomen vary from yellow to black, more rarely with a metallic blue shine (only M. paraensis sp. nov.). Thorax with acrostichal setae absent or reduced; 3–4 dorsocentral setae, 2 pairs of scutellar setae (absent in M. paraensis sp. nov.). Legs thin and long, tibia usually has dorsal setae along its length, some males and females may have pennate setae on legs. Wing mainly hyaline, with pterostigma in the costal cell, slightly infused apically; elongated dm cell; veins M 1, M 2 and CuA + CuP evanescent distally. Male terminalia with cerci divided into anterior, median and posterior lobes; subtriangular epandrium, with the presence of anterodorsal and posterodorsal lobes; phallus as long as the hypandrium, with base of phallus C-shaped, ejaculatory apodeme with three or four lamellae and fused to the phallus.
