Etymology

Named in honour of Dr Cristiane S. Serejo, in recognition of her significant contribution to amphipod taxonomic studies.

Diagnosis

Head with anteroventral margin oblique. Antenna 1 not reaching end of article 4 of antenna 2 peduncle. Antenna 2 subequal in length to body length. Pereopod 7 basis posterior margin rounded with few crenulations at inset plumose setae, reaching to end of distal margin of merus; merus posterior lobe weakly drawn out; propodus longer than carpus (1.2 times), not stout, length twice breadth. Epimeron 3 posteroventral corner quadrate. Urosomite 1 with saddle-shaped dorsal carina. Uropod 1 with one large robust seta on distal margin. Uropod 3 inner ramus longer and stouter than outer, with four robust setae along outer margin; inner margins of both rami with plumose setae. Telson with each lobe notched and pointed at apex, each notch bearing one plumose seta and one robust seta, dorsal surface with one pair of robust setae.

Description

Holotype, female 9.0 mm. Head ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) with anteroventral margin oblique, shorter than the first three body segments combined. Antenna 1 ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) not reaching end of article 4 of antenna 2 peduncle, peduncular article 2 3.3 times longer than article 3, with setae on ventral margin; flagellum longer than peduncle, with 15 articles. Antenna 2 ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) subequal in length to body length, peduncular article 4 1.1 times longer than article 5; flagellum with 22 articles.

Mandible ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) with nine robust setae in accessory setal row; mandibular palp article 2 elongate and with a row of setae on inner margin, article 3 0.6 times article 2, with medial and apical setae. Maxilla 1 ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) inner plate with one apical pectinate seta; outer plate with 10 setal-teeth; palp article 2 provided with two distal cusps, accompanied by five apical robust setae and subapical setae. Maxilliped ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) inner plate rectangular distally with apical row of simple setae and 2 apical robust setae; outer plate reaching to end of the palp article 2, bearing 11 chiselshaped robust setae, palp article 4 inserted at mid-length of the article 3. Upper lip, lower lip and maxilla 2 ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) with basic characters for the genus.

Coxae 1–4 ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ) longer than broad, coxae 1 and 2 with a notch on posteroventral corners and with a row of plumose setae on ventral margins. Gnathopod 1 ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ) shorter than gnathopod 2; basis inflated mid-distally with one row of simple setae on both margins; merus with setae on posterior margin; carpus subequal in length to propodus, both articles with pectinate setae and simple setae on posterior margins; dactylus slightly curved, with four setules along inferior margin. Gnathopod 2 ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ) basis with long simple setae on both margins; carpus longer than propodus (1.4 times), both articles with elongate simple setae on posterior margins; dactylus short, with four setules on inferior margin. Pereopods 3 and 4 ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ) similar in shape but fourth is more setose than third, both with dactyli subequal in length to carpus and propodus combined. Pereopod 3 ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ) with merus with plumose setae along one-quarter of posterior margin; carpus with plumose setae on posterodistal margin; propodus with setae on anterodistal corner. Pereopod 4 ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ) ischium with long plumose setae on posterior margin; merus length 2.9 times breadth, both margins with long plumose setae; propodus with simple setae on anterodistal margin. Pereopod 5 ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ) basis subovoid; carpus longer than propodus (1.1 times) drawn out posterodistally, with two sets of comb robust setae along posterior margin, bearing three long robust setae and two short robust setae on posterodistal corner, anterior margin with a row of six simple long setae; dactylus short and with two apical cusps. Pereopod 6 ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ) basis subovoid, with three plumose setae and four robust setae on anterior margin; carpus longer than propodus (1.2 times), posterodistal corner produced, bearing two long robust and five short robust setae, with two sets of comb robust setae along posterior margin, anterior margin with a row of simple setae; dactylus short and with two apical cusps. Pereopod 7 ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 ) basis posterior margin rounded with few crenulations at inset plumose setae, reaching to end of distal margin of merus; ischium and merus subequal in length; merus posterior lobe weakly drawn out, with plumose setae, anterodistal corner with one robust seta; carpus anterodistal and posterodistal corners with three and two robust setae, respectively; propodus longer than carpus (1.2 times), not stout, length twice breadth, with three robust setae on anterodistal corner; dactylus shorter than propodus (0.7 times) and with one simple seta on posterior margin.

Epimeron 3 ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) posteroventral corner quadrate. Urosomite 1 ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ) with saddle-shaped dorsal carina. Uropod 1( Figures 5 View Figure 5 and 7 View Figure 7 ) reaching to end of uropod 2 peduncle; peduncle longer than rami (1.2 times), with three robust setae on dorsal margin, with one large robust seta on distal margin; rami subequal in length, inner ramus with three robust setae on outer margin, outer ramus with three short robust setae on outer margin. Uropod 2 ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 ) peduncle longer than rami; rami subequal in length, both with robust setae on dorsal margins. Uropod 3 ( Figures 5 View Figure 5 and 7 View Figure 7 ) exceeding apex of uropods 1 and 2, peduncle shorter than rami, inner ramus longer and stouter than outer, with four robust setae along outer margin; inner margins of both rami with plumose setae; outer ramus notched apically and with two apical setae. Telson ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 ) stout, deeply cleft (0.7 times), each lobe notched and pointed at apex, each notch bearing one plumose seta and one robust seta, dorsal surface with one pair of robust setae.

Remarks

Ampelisca cristianae View in CoL sp. nov. is closer to A. lobata Holmes, 1908 View in CoL from the eastern Pacific coast and to A. burkei, Barnard and Thomas, 1989 View in CoL from the Florida coast. It was also recognized from the Brazilian coast by Valério-Berardo and Wakabara (2006) by the shape of the head, urosomite 1, uropod 3 and telson. However, two characters distinguished A. cristianae View in CoL sp. nov. from these other species: antenna 1 is distinctly shorter than peduncle of antenna 2 and peduncle of uropod 1 has a large robust seta on the outer distal margin. Moreover, comparing A. cristianae View in CoL . sp. nov. with A. burkei View in CoL from the Brazilian coast, we noticed that pereopod 7 has a different shape: in the the former species there are little notches on the basis of the posterior margin, merus is expanded to nearly the middle of carpus and propodus is 1.3 times longer than carpus. Other differences observed are: uropod 1 not reaching end of uropod 2 and uropod 3 with plumose setae on inner margins of both rami. Serejo et al. (2000) draw the outer ramus of uropod 1 of A. aff. lobata View in CoL without robust setae on outer margin. However, we have examined the same specimens and we have herein noted that these setae were omitted from their drawings.
