Members of the Papilionidaeare large butterflies. The swallowtails are aptly named, given the presence of prominent tails on their hindwings. Th e wings do not have androconial scales, and the hindwing has one anal vein. Th e foreleg tibia has an epiphysis. Th e larvae are often brightly colored, and they utilize a variety of food plants. Approximately 600 species of Papilionidaeare known worldwide, primarily in the Old World tropics. Th irty-nine species are known from North America; eight of these are known from AB.
