Reported frequently from Greece and other parts of the Mediterranean ( Castelli et al. 2008,  Zaabiet al. 2012,  Cinaret al. 2014, Mikac 2015) and considered cosmopolitan. However, Mackie (1984)re-examined European material identified as Prionospio cirriferaand found many specimens to actually belong to a species that could not be distinguished from Prionospio multibranchiataBerkeley, 1927, based on the available information at that time.  Sigvaldadottir(2002), in agreement with Mackie (1984), suggests that Prionospio cirriferais a North Sea species and probably does not occur south of Portugal. Mackie suggested that Mediterranean specimens probably belong to other, endemic species (Mackie pers. comm. in Simboura 1996) and later,  Dagliand Cinar(2011)described Prionospio maciolekaefrom Mediterranean specimens. Other specimens of Prionospio cirriferafrom Italy ( Giangrande and Gambi 1982) were re-examined by  Dagliand Cinar(2011)and shown to belong to the alien species Prionospio pulchraImajima, 1990.
