3. Senecio cuencanus Hieronymus (1894: 65) View in CoL . Aetheolaena cuencana (Hieronymus) Nordenstam (1978: 54) . Lasiocephalus cuencanus (Hieronymus) Cuatrecasas (1978: 309) . Type:— ECUADOR. Cañar / Azuay, Páramo de Chaning [hacienda Chanin], F.C.Lehmann 4915 (lectotype:K-000497740digital image!, designated here; isolectotype: US-00123278 digital image!, MO-714302 (fragment) digital image!)

Taxonomic notes: — Senecio cuencanus Hieronymus (1894: 65) is a putative endemic species of central-southern Ecuadorian Andes. Silva-Moure et al. (2013) recorded this species from Venezuela on the basis of a single collection (Ruíz-Terán et al. 16124, MERF-01183 digital image!). We identify this specimen as S. longepenicillatus Schultz Bipontinus ex Sandwith (1942: 226) .

Nomenclatural notes: —We located two specimens corresponding to the collection Lehmann 4915 (K-000497740 and US-00123278). There is also a plant fragment at MO that was acquired from the specimen kept at B, apparently destroyed in 1943. It is mounted on a herbarium sheet along with a picture of the destroyed specimen, and it must be considered part of the original material (MO-714302). The specimen K-000497740 is here designated as the lectotype of the name S. cuencanus because it is the most complete material.

Distribution: — Ecuador.
