Type material. HOLOTYPE. Adult female, BRAZIL. S„o Paulo, 23°32’56.34”S, 46°38’19.98”W, 801 m, 1.xi.1940, J. Lane (Hull Collection)
Length (n= 3): Body, 8.5–9.0 mm; Wings, 6.7–7.5 mm.
Diagnosis. Female frontal triangle with two rounded brown pollinose maculae; 3 rd to 4 th terga with triangular maculae; metatibia yellow on basal 1/4; metafemur yellow with a black ring or smudge on apical margin; surstylus in lateral view with dorsal and ventral margins approximately of the same width in the whole length; hypandrium in ventral view expanded laterally towards the apex.
Redescription. MALE. Head ( Fig. 63A View FIGURE 63 ): Frontal triangle and vertex subopaque black, the former broadly divided transversely by yellowish-brown pollen. Face pale greyish-yellow, almost white pubescent and with a similar pile. Face with a broad, shining, brownish-black middle vitta and a submedial, incomplete vitta partly bisecting the facial pubescence. Face with four transverse grooves; the pile of frontal triangle and vertex black. Frontal triangle black, brownish pollinose, pile black. Gena bluish-black, antennae yellowish. Ocellar triangle black, with black pile. Occiput pile fine, short and yellow. Antennae yellowish, short, ratio 1.1:1.0:2.2, scape and pedicel little longer than basoflagellomere; darker toward the end and dorsal on basoflagellomere; arista yellow at base and dark on apical third, pilose. Thorax ( Figs 63B–C View FIGURE 63 , 64D View FIGURE 64 ): Aeneous, mesonotum shining bright brassy-black with obscure, brownish pollinose vittae; with a pair of moderately separated vitta of light brownish yellow pollen, yellow pilose. Pleura grey brownish to rusty-colored pollen, yellow pilose. Scutellum with a pair of slender, pale bristles; fringe short and yellow. Wing ( Fig. 63C View FIGURE 63 ): Hyaline, slightly tinged with brown near the apex, stigma dark yellowish-brown; microtrichose, except cell c bare on basal 1/4, cell bm bare on basal 3/4 and cell r bare on basal 4/5, cell cua bare on anterior 1/3; calypter wholly white-yellowish; plumula white, halter yellow, capitulum slightly brown yellow. Legs ( Fig. 63C View FIGURE 63 ): Everywhere light orange-brown; metafemur yellow except the apical 1/5 narrowly brown; basal three protarsus brown, the apical one yellow-orange; another tarsus yellow; yellow to orange pilose. Abdomen ( Figs 63B View FIGURE 63 ): Elongate, 1 st tergum shining black, 2 nd shining blue-black with an obscure, diffuse, brownish-orange, elongate, sublateral maculae along the outer portion of tergum; widely separated and equidistant from base and apex of 2 nd tergum; on 3 rd tergum with quite similar, slightly smaller maculae that begin at the base; on 4 th tergum with smaller and similar basal maculae; sterna yellowish; male genitalia: surstylus in lateral view ( Fig. 64A View FIGURE 64 ) with dorsal margin slightly concave and ventral margin slightly convex, shorter than broad; hypandrium in ventral view ( Fig. 64C View FIGURE 64 ) narrowed laterally towards the apex; aedeagal lobe in ventral view ( Fig. 64C View FIGURE 64 ) with apex acute.
FEMALE ( Figs 63D–F View FIGURE 63 ). Similar to male except for usual sexual dimorphism and differing in Frontal triangle with a broad, brownish pollinose crossband occupying the frontal depression; between this band and the ocelli a somewhat narrow.Abdomen with a broad lateral macula, reaching 1/4 of segment length; on 3 rd to 4 th terga, there are a pair of lineal maculae, apically rounded and separated for the edge, reaching the anterior 2/3 of the segment length.
Taxonomic notes. Argentinomyia pollinosa is similar in appearance to A. maculata differing from them by the female frontal triangle with a complete transverse black fascia ( Figs 63D, F View FIGURE 63 ); metafemora yellow except the apical 1/5 narrowly brown; metatibiae yellow on basal 1/4 ( Figs 63A, C, D, F View FIGURE 63 ); 3 rd to 4 th terga with quadrate maculae ( Figs 63B, E View FIGURE 63 ). In A. maculata the female frontal triangle with two rounded brown pollinose maculae ( Figs 49D, F View FIGURE 49 ); metafemora yellow with a black ring or smudge on apical margin; metatibiae mostly yellow ( Figs 49A, C, D, F View FIGURE 49 ); 3 rd to 4 th terga with triangular maculae ( Figs 49B, E View FIGURE 49 ) (see “diagnosis” under each species or key).
Geographical range. Argentinomyia pollinosa (n= 37) is known from Argentina (Tucumán) in Serra do Mar, Serra da Fartura and Serra de Mantiqueira in Brazil (Minas Gerais, Paraná: Ponta Grossa, Guarapuava, Refugio de Vida Silvestre dos Campos de Palmas , S „o José dos Pinhais; Santa Catarina, S„o Paulo) and Eastern slope of Cordillera de Mérida in Venezuela * (Aragua) ( Fig. 93B View FIGURE 93 ). The species is present at low and middle altitudes (400– 2150 m) in the following biogeographical domains and provinces: Northern Andes : Venezuelan (500 m); Paraná (400–2150 m): Araucaria Forest (895–1274 m), Atlantic Forest (801–2150 m) , Paraná Forest (400 m) ; Chacoan: Chaco (915–1430 m).
