Cicada pekinensis Haupt, 1924: 296 –297 [type locality: “Peking” (= Beijing, China)]. Lyristes pekinensis: Schmidt, 1932: 119 , 122; Wu, 1935: 6; Matsumura, 1939: 47, 49; Liu, 1940: 80; Liu, 1978: 90; Chou et al., 1997: 287.

Material examined. Haupt (1924) described this species based on five male and four female specimens, of which one male and one female were designated as cotypes and have been preserved in the Museum and Institute of Zoology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw. These specimens must be considered as syntypes.

Measurements of types (n = 1 male and 1 female). Length of body: male 33.3, female 33.6; length of head and thorax together: male 14.6, female 15.8; length of abdomen: male 18.7, female 17.8; width of head including eyes: male 10.6, female 11.3; width of mesonotum: male 9.1, female 9.7; width of posterior margin of abdominal tergite 3: male 11.4, female 12.3; length of fore wing: male 37.6, female 40.6; width of fore wing: male 13.1, female 12.6; wing span: male 82.1, female 87.2.

Redescription of the male. Head including eyes distinctly wider than base of mesonotum. Distance between lateral ocelli and corresponding compound eyes more than twice the distance between lateral ocelli. Rostrum nearly reaching anterior margin of hind coxae. Pronotum with lateral margin weakly ampliated, not dentate. Wings hyaline, richly tinged with yellow. Fore wing with infuscations on radial (r) and radio-medial (r-m) crossveins and very indistinct infuscations on base of apical cell 3 (between r and r-m crossveins) and medial (m) and mediocubital (m-cu) crossveins. Hind wing without infuscations. Operculum nearly semicircular, with lateral margin not concave, about as long as wide; not extending beyond posterior margin of sternite II. Opercula overlapped at inner margins for about two-thirds the length of opercula from base. Abdomen longer than head and thorax together. Timbal cover completely covering timbal. Pygofer long, barrel-shaped. Uncal lobes fused into one, not bifurcate, rounded apically; apical half curved inwardly at about 140º in lateral view.

Body Coloration: Head black with a pair of anterior ochraceous marks. Antenna fuscous except for mostly ochraceous scape. Postclypeus fuscous with dull ochraceous medio-anterior spot. Anteclypeus mostly black except for castaneous medial ridge. Rostrum dull ochraceous with black apical part. Gena black with dull ochraceous patch anteriorly between eye and postclypeus and with brownish posterior part enclosing lorum.

Inner area of pronotum dark ochraceous with the following black to fuscous marks: a pair of median longitudinal fasciae, disconnected in middle, with their anterior and sub-posterior ends widened laterad; irregular marks along or near paramedian fissures and lateral fissures; and fascia along margin of inner area, disconnected at medial part. Pronotal collar dull ochraceous with narrowly fuscous outer margin and a pair of fuscous spots on sublateral corner. Mesonotum black with W-shaped median dull ochraceous mark along margin of submedian sigilla. Operculum dull ochraceous with basal fuscous patch.

Abdomen mostly black with the following dull ochraceous to castaneous marks: a pair of paramedian spots each on tergites 3 through 7; a pair of sublateral spots each on tergites 2 through 4; and a pair of additional small spots on tergite 3 next to sublateral spots. Tergite 8 with a pair of sublateral white powdery patches. Abdominal sternites dull ochraceous with black anterior part each on sternites III through VII.

Redescription of the female. Abdomen obconical, longer than head and thorax together. Abdominal sternites light castaneous with black anterior part each on sternites III through VII. Ovipositor sheath fuscous, not protruding beyond abdominal segment 9. Other characters identical to those of male.
