Diagnosis. Female and subadult male. Carapace smooth, unornamented. Pereopod 2 without fine hair-like setae. Telson shorter than uropod peduncles. Uropod endopod uniarticulate, subequal to exopod.
Adult male. Unknown.
Remarks. This is the only species of Axiogynodiastylis with a uniarticulate uropod endopod. The only species of Gynodiastylis known in New Zealand with a uniarticulate uropod endopod is G. laevis . In A. kopua the pseudorostrum is acute and pereonites 2–3 are not extremely broad, while in G. laevis the pseudorostrum is blunt and pereonites 2–3 are very broad, creating a large gap between pereopod 2 and pereopod 3. Depth range increased from 760 m to 414–1103 m, specimens collected from the Chatham Rise and the Challenger Plateau.
