Description. Body length (from apex of vertex to tip of forewings): male 4.30 (N = 1); female 4.55–4.80 mm (N = 3); forewing length: male 3.62 (N = 1); female 4.00– 4.15 mm (N = 3).
Coloration. General color yellowish white to yellowish brown, with blackish brown markings ( Figs 1–3 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ). Vertex ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) yellowish white, lateral carinae pale brown. Frons and clypeus ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) yellowish white, lateral sides of anteclypeus brown. Genae ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) dark brown. Ocelli reddish brown, eyes reddish brown to dark brown. Antennae ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) yellowish white except dorsal part of basal segment dark brown. Pronotum ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) blackish brown, except apical 1/3, median carina and its lateral sides and posterior margin yellowish white. Mesonotum ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) blackish brown, except apex of scutellum yellowish white to yellowish brown. Forewings ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) pale yellowish white, almost hyaline, except basal 1/3 dark brown; hindwings ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) pale yellowish white, with central area of base and transverse venation pale brown to brown. Lateral areas of pro- and mesothorax blackish brown. Fore and median legs yellowish white, except coxae blackish brown, hind legs yellowish white. Abdomen with dorsal areas dark brown, lateral areas somewhat reddish brown, ventral areas dark brown with posterior margin of each segment yellowish brown to reddish brown. Genital segment brown to dark brown, anal style yellowish brown, genital styles ( Figs 6, 8, 9 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) blackish brown.
Head and thorax. Vertex shorter in middle line than wide at base (0.85:1), width at apex narrower than at base (0.82:1), anterior margin truncate, lateral and submedian carinae distinct, median carina indistinct. Frons 2.56 times longer in middle line than widest part, as wide at base as at apex. Base of postclypeus as wide apex of frons. Antennae with basal segment subequal to broad, shorter than second segment (0.24:1). Pronotum as long as vertex. Mesonotum 1.50 times as long as vertex and pronotum together in middle line. Forewings ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) longer in middle line than broad at widest part (2.76:1), transverse venation located in middle near base. Hindwings ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) narrow and long, longer in middle line than broad at widest part (2.64:1).
Male genitalia. Anal segment ( Figs 5, 6 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) short, ring-like, ventral margin without a process. Pygofer in profile ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) with dorsal margin shorter than ventral margin, laterodorsal angle blunt and rounded, posterior margin slightly sinuate; in posterior view ( Figs 6, 7 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ), with opening longer than wide, ventral margin broadly concave, without medioventral process. Aedeagus in profile ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) tubular, parallel, apical portion curved ventrally, apex rounded, membranous; gonopore at apex, node-like; pallobase arising from dorsobase of aedeagus, as long as aedeagus, stout spine-like, thick at base, tapering apically, turning right and then ventrad. Genital styles in posterior view ( Figs 6, 8 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) moderately long, narrow and divergent, lateral margins subparallel, sinuate, tapering apically, inner margin with an angular process near apical 1/4; in profile ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 1 – 10 ) apex acute and middle part strongly arched caudally.
Type material. Holotype 3, China: Yunnan, Kunming, Xishan Park (102°42´N, 25°04´E), collected from bamboo, 22 Aug. 2006 (Z.-G. Zhang) ( IEGU).
Paratypes: China: 3 ƤƤ, same data as holotype ( IEGU).
Host plant. Bamboo.
Distribution. Southwest China (Yunnan).
Remarks. This new species is similar to B. basifusca Hou & Chen, 2010 in general appearance, especially in the markings on the thorax and forewings, but can be distinguished by the frons and postclypeus yellowish white (frons with basal 2/3 and postclypeus dark brown in basifusca ); the ventral margin of anal segment without processes (ventral margin of anal segment with two long processes in basifusca ); the ventral margin of pygofer without medioventral processes (ventral margin of pygofer with three medioventral processes in basifusca ); and the aedeagus with apical half curved ventrally (aedeagus with apical half straight in basifusca ).
Based on characters of the male genitalia, this species cannot be placed in any of the seven species groups of Bambusiphaga mentioned above. It remains solitary within the genus and can be characterized as follows: anal segment ring-like, without process; pygofer without any processes on lateral and ventral margins; genital styles moderately long, apex forked; aedeagus with developed spine-like pallobase.
Etymology. This species is named after the type locality, Kunming, Yunnan Province in China.
