Diagnosis. Beana mutaneni sp. nov. is a close relative to Beana penniuncus sp. nov. by size (23 mm), smaller than the other known Beana species (30 mm). Externally B. mutaneni is darker with brownish transverse lines, B. penniuncus is more variegated and transverse lines are white. B. mutaneni has same kind strong sexual diorphism as the type species B. terminigera . Male genitalia are clearly different from those of B. penniuncus having uncus two-branched.
Description. Adult. Forewing length 23–25 mm in males and females. Head with frons unicolorous cream-colored scales, labial palpi curved upwards and apical segment narrower, neck with erect cream-colored and occasional blackish scales, male antennae shortly ciliate, females filiform. Male forewings basal, subbasal area blackish brown, apical part lighter grey, orbicular stigma unclear, reniform black, postmedial line double, submarginal line unclear. Hindwings light grey darkening apically, underside grey. Female forewings similar to male, except triangular dark area filling most part of the basal half of the wing. Abdomen 8 th tergite with flap-like apodemes. Male genitalia ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 a–c): Uncus small, slender, curved with fine tip, valva long, broadening apically, with long distal costal process, central process with brushes of setae, distal saccular process apically with brushes of long setae, saccus narrow, rounded, cucullus apically pointed, aedeagus large, narrow, straight. Female genitalia ( Fig. 1 d View FIGURE 1 ): Papillae anales rigth-angled, apophyses posteriores narrow, twice length of apophyses anteriores, ductus bursae long. narrow, finely scobinate, corpus bursae roundish without scobination and signum.
Distribution. The new species is so far known from Northern Thailand, Lampang district.
Etymolgy. The species name is dedicated to Dr. Marko Mutanen (Ecology and Genetics research unit, University of Oulu, FINLAND).
