Lectotype (designated here):—[illustration] tab. XV − XVII, fig. 1 in Morren (1875d).

Epitype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Saka 136 (HRCB!).

Lectotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: s.d. (fl.), A.F.M. Glaziou 8044 (K [K001250091], digital image!). Image available at http://www.kew.org/herbcatimg/867971.jpg.

Probable isolectotypes:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Lagoa , 20 April 1875 (fl.), A.F.M. Glaziou 8044 (C [C10014443]!, P [ P01798950 ], digital image!) ; Quinta de São Christovão , plante cultiveé, 24 November 1875 (fl.), A.F.M. Glaziou 8044 ( P [ P01798949 ], digital image!). S. loc., s.d. (fl.), A.F.M. Glaziou 8044 ( P [ P01798948 ], digital image!) .

Note:—The plate presented by Morren (1875d) consists in a gathering of eight colored drawings of leaves. Nevertheless, the figure 1, which corresponds to the lectotype of Calathea kummeriana , clearly represents the hirsute petiole and leaf sheath, a feature that distinguishes this species from C. oppenheimiana , which leaf blade is somewhat similar in leaf ornamentation, but with glabrous petiole and leaf sheath. In addition to the distinctive indument and the leaf blade ornamentation, the collection chosen as epitype also presents flowers—because this species has been found only under cultivation until now, we couldn’t find a collection with duplicates. The name ‘kummeriana’ pays homage to general Kummer, honorary president for the general committee of the International Horticulture Exposition, carried out in Cologne, Germany.

Calathea glaziovii was described by Bentham (1883: 654) as having villose leaf sheaths and inflorescences, distichous bracts and small flowers. Even though there is no mention on leaf blade ornamentation in his description, it can be noted on the dried material of Glaziou 8044. The collection deposited at K (K001250091) is chosen as lectotype since it is the institution where Bentham used to work (Stafleu & Cowan 1976: 173).
