Caroxylon iljinii (Botsch.) Akhani View in CoL , comb. nov. Salsola iljinii Botschantzev (1980: 131) View in CoL .
In the phylogenetically based classification of Salsoleae s.l. by Akhani et al. (2007), the traditional Salsola have been segregated into nine lineages. The largest lineage is the resurrected genus Caroxylon Thunberg (1782: 37) . However, we did not combine all published names into Caroxylon to avoid conflicts of possibly misinterpreted species. Salsola iljinii was one of these species. This is an orophytic species related to Caroxylon canescens Moquin-Tandon (1849: 208) Akhani & E.H. Roalson in Akhani et al. (2007: 947) and C. carpathum Davis (1953: 139) Akhani & E.H. Roalson in Akhani et al. (2007: 947). Two main characters separate C. iljinii from C. canescens including its wingless fruits and 1–3-nerved tepals. Caroxylon canescens has winged fruits, and its outer tepals have 5–7 nerves ( Freitag 1997). Caroxylon iljinii is an endemic species of Khorassan Kopet Dagh Mountains ( Memariani et al. 2016b).
