Diagnosis:— Clematis pengii is similar to C. formosana , but can be distinguished by acuminate (vs. acute) apex of the leaflets, unlobed margin (vs. sometimes deeply lobed), sepal size (12.4–18.6*4.8–6.7 vs. 4.3–12.2*2.3–4.9), number of stamens (78–116 vs. 30–45), and phenology (flowering in Jun. to Sep. vs. flowering in Oct. to Dec.).
Description: — Vines, woody, scandent, perennial, caulicle olive green, sulcate, velutinous. Mature woody stems brown, becoming glabrous. Leaves ternate, phyllotaxy alternate in seedlings and suckers, opposite at maturity. Leaflets 3, membranous to chartaceous, ovate or ovate–lanceolate, apex acuminate, base obtuse to cuneate, margin serrate or entire, unlobed; sparsely pubescent on both surfaces, trichomes mainly distributed on veins; terminal leaflet 55.3– 86.1 mm long, 14.2–29.5 mm wide; lateral leaflet 29.1–51.9 mm long, 11.7–23.3 mm wide, asymmetrical. Petiole and petiolules tendril–like, sparsely pubescent. Inforescences cymes, axillary, flowers 1–9 or more. Pedicels densely velutinous. Bracts and bracteoles ovate or leaf-like, decussate on peduncle and pedicels. Flowers spreading, 25.4–38.2 mm in diameter. Sepals 4, white, revolute, 12.4–18.6 mm long, 4.8–6.7 mm wide, ovate to elliptic, apex mucronulate, base acute, adaxial glabrous, abaxial densely velutinous. Stamens 78–116, glabrous, 9.6–12.3 mm long, filaments white, linear, swollen at base; anthers white, turning black after dehiscence, 0.8–1.2mm, narrowly–elliptic, longitudinally dehiscent, connectives shorter than pollen sacs. Carpels 7–13, sericeous, 6.4–7.8 mm long. Achene brown or black, 4.2–5.3 mm long, 2.8–3.9 mm wide, ovoid to globose, densely white puberulous. Style persistent, 19.4–40.3 mm long, with pale yellow or white hairs.
Phenology: —Flowering between June to August, and fruiting between July to October.
Distribution: —Endemic to Taiwan, at forest margins, between 500–1500 m elevation in central to southern Taiwan (Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County) ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ).
Etymology: —The specific epithet “ pengii ” honors Prof. Dr. Ching-I Peng (彭鏡毅), the first collector of Clematis pengii in Taiwan.

Phenology: —Flowering between June to September, and fruiting between July to October.
Distribution: —Endemic to Taiwan, in open areas and at forest margins, between 300–1800 m elevation.
