DISTRIBUTION. — Global distribution: northern Australia, New Caledonia, live in 330-1920 m, Philippines, live in 668-2050 m, western Indian Ocean (Scarabino 1995). Distribution in the New Caledonian region: throughout the region from the Chesterfield Plateau, all around New Caledonia, and the Norfolk and Loyalty Ridges, live in 330-1920 m.
REMARKS. — The holotype (dd) of Compressidentalium clathratum (ZMB 33.122, off Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, 550 fm [1006 m]) was examined for the first time during the present study and confirms the misidentification of Scarabino (1995: 259, figs 66, 70j). This mistake concerns all specimens from New Caledonia identified by Scarabino (1995) as Compressidentalium sedecimcostatum ; all are now identified as C. clathratum . Compressidentalium sedecimcostatum has a shiny surface and intercostal spaces finely striated throughout (Scarabino 1995). The ribs are smooth and the shell is considerably arched, both characters contrasting with C. clathratum . Therefore these are two distinct species, and I do not agree with Lamprell & Healy (1998), who treated C. sedecimcostatum as a junior synonym of C. clathratum .
